Backroads Bike Tours Reviews
Backroads is arguably one of the largest bike tour companies in the industry. Every year they have hundreds of departures in over 60 destinations worldwide, including 5 continents, 48 countries and territories, 4 Canadian provinces and 20 US states. And, their destination list is updated every year to include the best new cycling spots around the globe.
A bike tour with Backroads has the unique ability to be customized, by you, at the beginning of each day. On most tours, there are multiple routes available depending on your ability level and how long you want to ride that day. We've found that this is ideal for couples or groups of travelers who took the trip together but had very different cycling abilities. No other tour operator has this type of planning feature. However, guides stay with the group on the standard route so you'll be on your own with a map if you stray from the planned itinerary. Some travelers love the freedom while others see this as a lack of service.
Another advertised advantage of Backroads is their industry leading two support vans on 95% of their tours. However, when you read between the lines you'll see that more vans are necessary as group sizes are larger than other similar tour operators. They may need two (or three) vans for all 18-26 people while other tour operators can get by perfectly fine with one van for 10 people. We highly recommend checking with Backroads before you book to get a headcount. You don't want to end up getting lost in the shuffle of a large group.
If you've done a little comparison shopping already, you'll see that Backroads is strikingly similar to Butterfield & Robinson in many ways. Their inclusions appear nearly identical. But, you'll find that Backroads is the less luxurious of the two companies once you look at the accommodations offered. This isn't to say you're staying at a Super 8 equivalent. Some of the hotels may be the same as B&R, but Backroads doesn't shy away from the less exclusive alternatives. Where money is no option for B&R, Backroads can sometimes appear budget conscious in comparison - which is a great alternative for many travelers.

Backroads Customer Reviews
The absolute best vacation of my life. We wanted to take a Backroads trip since we got married. We finally got around to it 30 years later for our 30th anniversary. It was absolutely the best vacation I have ever taken. I wish we hadn't waited 30 years. The leaders, food (loved the picnic lunches) and biking were awesome.Posted by Mary Navroth
